Vojta Therapy

Neurophysiological treatment method to promote motor development – for children and adults

What is Vojta Therapy?

Vojta therapy is a neurophysiological treatment method developed by Czech neurologist Prof. Dr. Václav Vojta. It is based on the principle of reflex locomotion: Through targeted pressure on specific body zones in defined starting positions, motor reactions are triggered automatically, i.e. reflexively. These movement patterns are genetically predetermined in every human and can be activated through Vojta therapy.

How Vojta Therapy Works

  • Facilitation of Physiological Movement Patterns: Activation of natural, coordinated movement sequences
  • Improvement of Muscle Coordination: Optimization of the interaction of all muscle groups
  • Promotion of Uprightness: Support of upright posture and balance
  • Deepening of Breathing: Improvement of respiratory function through activation of respiratory muscles
  • Activation of Metabolism: Stimulation of blood circulation and digestion

Applications

Vojta therapy is used for various disorders of the central nervous system and musculoskeletal system:

For Infants and Children

  • • Developmental delays
  • • Cerebral movement disorders
  • • Asymmetries and postural deformities
  • • Hip dysplasia/dislocation
  • • Premature infant follow-up
  • • Scoliosis

For Adults

  • • After stroke (hemiplegia)
  • • Multiple sclerosis
  • • Spinal cord injury
  • • Peripheral paralysis
  • • Spinal disorders
  • • Orthopedic problems

Neuromuscular Diseases

  • • Muscular dystrophies
  • • Spastic paralysis
  • • Ataxias (coordination disorders)
  • • Movement disorders

Accompanying Treatment

  • • Respiratory diseases
  • • Swallowing and chewing disorders
  • • Postural weaknesses
  • • Functional disorders of the spine

Vojta Treatment Process

Vojta therapy is individually tailored to the patient and requires special training of the therapist:

1

Assessment

Detailed analysis of motor abilities and restrictions. Creation of an individual therapy plan.

2

Positioning

The patient is brought into a defined starting position (prone, supine, or lateral position).

3

Triggering Reflexes

Targeted pressure on specific zones automatically triggers coordinated movement patterns. The reaction occurs involuntarily.

4

Parental Instruction

For children, parents are instructed to perform exercises several times daily at home (3-4x daily for 5-20 minutes each).

Frequently Asked Questions

From what age can Vojta therapy be applied?

Vojta therapy can be applied from birth. The earlier therapy begins for developmental disorders, the better the chances of success. However, therapy is also very effective for adults.

Is Vojta therapy painful?

No, the therapy is not painful. The targeted pressure may be uncomfortable but does not cause pain. Crying in infants is a defensive reaction to the unfamiliar stimulation and actually supports the therapeutic effect.

How often must Vojta therapy be performed?

For infants and children, therapy should be performed 3-4x daily at home by parents (5-20 minutes each). Therapeutic instruction and monitoring occurs 1-2x weekly at the practice. For adults, 2-3 therapy sessions per week are usually sufficient.

Does health insurance cover the costs?

Yes, Vojta therapy is covered by all statutory and private health insurance with appropriate medical prescription. Prescription is usually issued by pediatricians, orthopedists, or neurologists.
